ABB celebrates the holidays with more than donations

With Thanksgiving approaching, there are currently several charitable initiatives underway for the holidays.

Earlier this year, ABB announced the company was working with Feeding America to support food banks located in the communities where ABB facilities are located. Employee donations were matched by ABB Foundation, the company’s philanthropic arm, for a total of more than $165,000 in food aid.

With the holidays approaching, ABB’s local offices have picked up the baton. There are currently several charitable initiatives underway, some again focused on food insecurity.

ABB’s Encompass Women—an employee resource group within ABB—is working with Meals on Wheels America with a donation target of $10,000. All funds raised will be matched by the ABB Foundation. But there’s an added element—letters, written by ABB employees, will be sent to the seniors who receive food through Meals on Wheels.

“It’s especially important to reach out this year because the pandemic has forced people into isolation,” says Kristine Templin, Chief Development Officer at Meals on Wheels America. “But for many homebound seniors, isolation is something they experience every day.”

Senior citizens are also the focus of  ABB’s LEAD Early Career Rotational Program, for recent college graduate. LEAD members are writing  letters that will be distributed to senior centers through Love for Our Elders.

“This time of year can be tough, especially if you can’t be with your family,” says LEAD Abby Thomas. “This is a small gesture to let those people know they’re not alone.”

Beyond the work with Meals on Wheels, ABB’s Encompass Military & Allies group is raising money for Wreaths Across America to honor fallen servicemembers. Every December, the group coordinates wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery and more than 2,100 additional locations across the U.S., at sea and abroad.

ABB locations are also looking ahead to Christmas with initiatives to support Toys for Tots and fundraising for local “Santa Shops” that provide gifts for  children of low-income families.

Feeding America has recognized ABB as a supporting partner for the donations made by ABB employees and the ABB Foundation to support COVID-19 relief.  With more than 50 major manufacturing facilities across the country, ABB looks to make a significant impact this holiday season.
