From the lab: Ingress Protection (IP) testing of Harnessflex sealed conduit systems

In the first edition of our "From the Lab" series, we test Harnessflex NC Conduit and Sealed Fittings to IP69 (IEC BS EN 60529) standard

It is often said that an electrical system is only as reliable as the conduit and fittings used to protect the cables. With electrical wiring representing the heartbeat of any heavy automotive vehicle as it navigates treacherous terrain in demanding environments, it is critical that wiring is kept safe and secure in order to maintain vehicle productivity.

That said, it is not just during intensive applications where vehicle wiring needs to be protected, but also in day-to-day maintenance too. High pressure washing is a common way of keeping buses, trucks and other specialist vehicles clean and presentable, however without the right conduit system in place it can leave vehicle wiring vulnerable to damage.

With this in mind, we decided to test the resilience of our Harnessflex Sealed Conduit systems in our in-house Ingress Protection (IP) testing chamber. Through our IP testing chamber, we are able to replicate a variety of real world scenarios – from sprays that may come from light rain fall through to power water jets that come as a result of a vehicle being cleaned down. Based on how the system performs under the testing conditions, it is granted an IP rating which is used to classify the degree of protection provided by enclosures of electrical equipment.

To see how our Harnessflex Sealed Conduit systems protect vehicle wiring against close-range, high pressure, high temperature spray downs, we tested a sample under IPX9 to IEC BS EN 60529 conditions. This involved placing a roll of paper inside the system, spraying it from multiple angles as it rotated and seeing if any ingress occurred causing the paper to dampen. We are pleased to say that after testing seven different systems three times each inside the chamber, every time the paper remained dry and the IPX9 test was passed.
