Driving the European digital paper mill of the future with ABB Pulp and Paper Tour

What happens when you combine the latest digital technology, a tour bus and the Swedish pulp and paper industry? You get an interactive solutions demo right at your mill’s doorstep.

In November, we headed out on tour to meet customers and demonstrate some of ABB’s pioneering solutions.

ABB has worked closely with the pulp and paper industry in Sweden—and around the world—for many years. We have acquired experience, knowledge and an in-depth understanding of the industry. We meet our customers. We hear about the problems. We see the challenges. And from there, we can create smart solutions that offer genuine benefits.

Every company collects data as a matter of course today. But not all of them make optimal use of that data.

Fully utilizing the possibilities digital technology offers is a necessity in resolving the complex challenges pulp and paper mills face. By combining digital technology and data analysis with domain, technology and automation expertise, ABB develops solutions that are customized to optimize complicated industrial processes in the pulp and paper industry.

It is these integrated solutions that we wanted to demonstrate on our tour. And we wanted to meet our customers once again. The dialog we have is incredibly important in driving development forward. This is where the foundations are laid for solutions that create genuine business value – higher productivity, better quality and lower production costs.

Our Swedish tour went from Kalix in the north to Stockholm in the south with stops at BillerudKorsnäs Karlsbrog, Mondi Dynäs, SCA Östrand and Holmen Iggesund. At each mill, we were given the opportunity to welcome visitors in our specially designed trailer. Inside, we had built a fully automated, optimized and connected mill environment, complete with laboratory, operator, and paper machine environments.

There, you can follow the entire flow in the mill, from the stock preparation to the paper machine, the operator’s room, and finally the lab. We show how we can measure the consistency of the stock, before it goes over to the paper machine where components in the ABB Ability™ Quality Management System— including actuators, scanner and sensor, and web inspection solutions—continue to monitor and control quality online. Everything is integrated into the operator environment controlled by the ABB Ability™ System 800xA Extended Operator Workplace (EOW), along with the ABB Ability ™ Manufacturing Execution System, Paper Machine Drives and many other advanced solutions. The lab includes automated testing of produced paper or board via L&W Autoline.

These are all some of our very latest and most advanced solutions, made accessible in a unique way. Demonstrating all these on mill home soil was tremendous fun and the response we received was overwhelming. “This is the future” was voiced by many customers.

I think that is true. These kinds of digitally-enabled solutions are a necessity for high quality, cost effective production. Something that is a must in an industry where the competition is incredibly tough.

Are you curious? Would you like to see the ABB Pulp and Paper Tour for yourself? Next spring, we are hitting the road again, get in touch if you would like our bus to make a stop at your mill.
