An engineer in Human Resources – new field, new challenge

My internship so far
Wait, what? An engineer in Human Resources? Yes, indeed. I decided to do an internship in between my Bachelors and Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg. But as I had already done a couple of work placements and internships in engineering, I wanted to experience something different. I knew of ABB so I decided to apply for its internship program. To be honest it was a bit random that I landed in HR – yet, it could not have been better.
I started my main projects within the first few days of joining my new team. Among them the creation of a database and a virtual collaboration space for a global leadership development program, which is an insightful and ambitious training open to all ABB employees. I also support the application process for language courses offered to ABB employees, as well as the nomination process for another global leadership training, which mainly targets senior leaders in the organization.
After a month, I decided to extend my internship and stay a bit longer than initially planned. I am now working on a project supporting the deployment of ABB’s next level strategy, which was recently launched and I’m very proud to be part of it.
Within this rather short space of time, I have broadened my horizons, learned a lot, enjoyed the international and productive working environment and expanded my capabilities. At the same time, I am happy to see what I have achieved – not just in quantity, but especially in quality and effectiveness of my actions at work.
I am challenged daily and I like that.
